The Tony-Award-winning musical, written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, is loosely based on King Henry VIII’s wives and how they deal with circumstances involving marriage, divorce, and executions! The musical features an esteemed creative team, including directors Moss and Jamie Armitage and Olivier Award-nominee choreographer Carrie-Ann Ingrouille. The story of King Henry VIII of France has been retold many times through novels, films, and TV series. However, you’ve never seen a depiction like Six The Musical! If you love pop music and comedy about marriage and beheadings, you should hurry and grab your tickets now to Six The Musical at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans!
Six tells the story of King Henry VIII’s six wives, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Katherin Howard, and Catherine Parr. Each character embodies a modern pop star and has the likeness and style of real singers like Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Avril Lavigne, and more. The six queens are performing at a pop concert and are competing for the role of the band’s lead singer. Whoever had the worst experience with King Henry VIII will win the coveted position. Although the story is a light depiction of the real Henry VIII’s life, some autobiographical elements remain, such as Catherine of Aragon’s annulment with the king and Anne Boleyn’s beheading. As the characters compete against each other, Catherine Parr questions why they are doing the contest in the first place. Who will come out victorious? And will the queens ever find happiness?
Although the queen’s characteristics are based on modern pop stars, the musical features an impressive original score by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss. In 2022, Six won the Tony Award for Best Original Score and Best Costume Design in a Musical. Meanwhile, at the Drama Desk Awards, Six received four awards, including Outstanding Music and Oustanding Lyrics. This award-winning major production actually has a humble origin. The show first opened at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017. In the same year, producers provided Marlow and Moss with a substantial budget, and the production opened in London’s West End, followed by a U.K. Tour one year later. In 2019, Six The Musical successfully completed a North American Tour before finally opening on Broadway in 2021.
With all the jukebox musicals around at the moment, Six is proof that we can still deliver great musical scores without borrowing from history’s best Top 40 tracks. The songs are achingly familiar and feel like instant hits – with each one dedicated to a wife’s sad story. – Bianca O’ Neill from Time Out Magazine.
“You come for the Queens, and these queens do not disappoint. Like the musical version of Alexander Hamilton himself, who is Eminem-meets-Sweeney Todd, each of the ex-wives embody a couple of modern ‘Queenspirations.’” – Cassie Tongue of the Guardian.
As expected, the unique and hilarious musical garnered rave reviews from critics. Time Out Magazine wrote that Six’s music was vaguely familiar, but the musical proved “that we can still deliver great musical scores without borrowing from history’s best Top 40 tracks.” Meanwhile, Jesse Green from the New York Times had nothing but good things to say about Six, “The exuberant queenhood-is-powerful pageant about the wives of Henry VIII was shut down on opening night by the pandemic. Now it’s back, and it totally rules.” The Guardian’s Cassie Tongue added that the highlight of the musical is the queens themselves. “You come for the Queens, and these queens do not disappoint. Like the musical version of Alexander Hamilton himself, who is Eminem-meets-Sweeney Todd, each of the ex-wives embodies a couple of modern ‘Queenspirations.’”
