When compared to the original plot of Romeo & Juliet which was presented on stage roughly forty decades ago, fans have distinguished the many alterations that were made to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly newer musical based on the same leading lady. Shakespeare’s original drama is based around the tragedy that transpires because of rash decision-making and the uncontrolled passion of two lovers, which results in the poisoning of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragedy and instead pursues a more positive outlook by concentrating on the infinite possibilities of life, even after such painful experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new productionl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her gang of friends, who head to Paris and find their identities not just as individuals, but as mighty women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist flip through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes control of her husband’s narrative and alters the ending of his beloved classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a rare moment to shine, while welcoming new and equally talented women to the stage. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the production is able to incorporate popular culture, specifically songs from recent generations, that encapsulate the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the leading ladies throughout the musical. Even the attire worn by the play’s cast give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while showing the contrast between the new show and the previous classic by contrasting Elizabethan attire and iconography with today’s fashion styles. Each aspect of the show was carefully thought-out to symbolize empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
