Just how is nightclub sensation Roxie Hart going to get out of this predicament? During an argument with her lover, Fred Casely, she murdered him after discovering that he was planning to break off their affair. Hart’s husband Amos Hart arrives. Roxie lied that the murdered man was a buglar trying to break in. He was prepared to take the fall for his wife but eventually changed his mind upon discovering that she was having an affair with this man (althought she denies doing this act). Roxie Hart was arrested and sent to prison for women, where she meets Velma Kelly, a woman who murdered her husband and sister after discovering them in bed together. Roxie starts to take the limelight from Velma and also begins to steal her lawyer. In this world of celebrity, murder, love and rivalry, who will come out victorious?

Based on real life events in the 20’s, Chicago is based on the 1926 play with the same title. The story revolves around wanna be Vauldeville performers during the jazz age. During these times, several cases of high profile women murdering their husbands arose.

Today, Chicago the Musical is based on the 1996 Broadway revival featuring music, book, and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb. The production also features the amazing work of Bob Fosse, who co-wrote, directed and choreographed the piece. Chicago the Musical first played on Broadway in 1975, but the groundbreaking revival premiered in 1996. The revival earned the production numerous accolades, including six Tony Awards including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Direction of a Musical. Over at the Drama Desk Awards, the musical won seven awards including Outstanding Revival of a Musical. The musical also won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Album in 1997.

There is no mystery how this musical raked in all the awards. With a super creative team, it’s bound to bring home all the praises and trophies. The production brought in the astounding talents of Ann Reinking for choreography, John Lee Beatty for set design, William Ivey Long on costume, Ken Billington on lighting, and Scott Lehrer on sound. Meanwhile, the touring cast is sure to bring the magic and brilliance of the original Broadway production.

This year’s touring cast includes Eric Jayne as Roxie Hart, Raymond Bokhour as Amos Hart, John Michael Fiumara as Fred Casley, Sophie Carmen Jones as Velma Kelly, Max Von Essen as Billy Flynn, and Nakiya Peterkin as Mama Morton. This ensemble is truly a line up of stellar performers who are guaranteed to bring these characters to life.

The Harvard Crimson also mentioned great words, “The musical’s flamboyance proves tasteful and elegant, and the actors’ faithful rendition of this character-driven story captivates audiences.” The review also continued to highlight the choreography, “Chicago” is also a meticulously choreographed manifestation of violent female agency.”

The Houston Chronicle called it, “Brash, bawdy, bold, Chicago is still kickin’.” The article continued to rave about the production. “John Kander and Fred Ebb’s 1975 musical, as realized by the controversial Bob Fosse, is still right in tune with a society besotted by social media.”

In this case, it’s not just professional reviewers that are gagging over the Broadway revival of Chicago. Lilithia Reviews wrote, “It is easy to say that Chicago the Musical is fantastic, but it is more than that. This production is one of the tightest technically executed shows I have ever seen. There is absolutely no weakness in any of the cast and those that shine not only do so alone, but they elevate the performers around them.”
